Kaliningradskaya TPP-2 is one of the most modern power generators in Russia using heat-recovery steam generators to generate heat from turbine exhaust gas. It was designed and built to cover the demand for electricity in Kaliningrad Region, and potentially to sell electricity to Lithuania. Kaliningradskaya TPP-2 is a critical energy facility for Kaliningrad Region.
The first power generation unit was launched in October, 2005. The second power generating unit rated at 425 MW was launched on December 21, 2010. On October 28, 2010, a heat pipeline connecting Kaliningradskaya TPP-2 with the southern part of Kaliningrad started operation. It significantly increased the reliability of heat delivery in the city, and improved the environment in Kaliningrad because it allowed to shut down boilers fueled by fuel oil and coal. Another heat pipeline is currently scheduled for construction.
This power plant is located in a large city and must comply with strict environmental safety requirements. PGU-450 are high-efficiency steam-gas units firing natural gas, recycling exhaust heat and meeting high environmental performance standards. Kaliningradskaya TPP-2 has an integrated environmental protection program in place focused on reducing all aspects of its environmental impact. This program complies with the Russian laws and is based on the Environmental Protection Plan.
