Safety and environment

Environmental safety is one of the key business areas of Inter RAO – Electric Power Plants. The Company bears a share of responsibility for the environment and public health in the regions affected by Company operations.

To meet commitments on environmental protection and sustainable use of natural resources, branches of Inter RAO – Electric Power Plants were included in the Target Ecological Program of Inter RAO Group up to 2020 with a view to 2030. Under this program, the measures are being implemented to gradually minimize the environmental impact.

Measures of Inter RAO – Electric Power Plants for increasing energy efficiency of the production and reducing specific fuel consumption, as well as introduction of new highly efficient equipment and decommission of outdated equipment – all these actions contribute to reduction of the volume and intensity of greenhouse gas emissions.

Environmental performance benchmarks

Specific emission of pollutants

The use of advanced technologies helps to avoid exceeding atmospheric emission limits, which was proved by a continuing trend of decreasing specific emissions per generated electricity unit, which has been going on over several years.

Water use

Ad hoc introduction of anhydrous technologies, water reuse and recycling systems, as well as introduction of water use register and elimination of water losses, enables the Company to reduce water consumption.

Discharge of polluted wastewater

Another important area of the Company's environmental activities is the reduction of polluted wastewater discharge and the increase of water reuse.

Production waste generation

There is a decrease in general waste generation in the Company as a whole. This was achieved by decreasing the amount of ash and slag from burning coal due to reduced share of coal in the fuel mix.
